Does this ever happen to you? You’re in the middle of doing something completely selfish and a good-deed opportunity appears right in front of your eyes? Freaky, isn’t it?
Today, for example, I was just about to pay for my marginally frivolous purchases at Winners (jersey sheets …half-price), and I noticed bright yellow paper suns plastered all over the back wall behind the cash desk.
At first I thought it was some sort of employee-of-the-month activity, so I asked the cashier about it. Turns out, each sunshine decal represented a customer donation to the Sunshine Foundation. The staff person explained a little about the cause and I was happy to contribute, sign my sunshine sticker and watch him add it to the wall with the others.
10th Annual Buy Some Sun Campaign
Here’s what else I found out on their website:
From June 8th to July 5th, you can purchase a sunshine decal at any Winners store across Canada for $2 or $10 to support the Sunshine Foundation.
The Foundation was established in 1987 by a London, Ontario, police officer as a legacy to his son who passed away of muscular dystrophy. Sunshine makes dreams come true for kids with severe disabilities as well as life-threatening illnesses.
Here’s the story of one of the 6,500 kids across Canada whose dreams have been fulfilled by the Sunshine Foundation:
Katrina’s Dream of Dolphins
Katrina is a happy and spirited 12-year-old girl, who loves animals, especially dolphins. She saw how beautifully dolphins move in the water and dreamed of swimming freely, just like a dolphin.
The magical day came when Katrina was lowered into the water and a dolphin swam up to her.
Her family told the Sunshine Foundation that Katrina’s swim with the dolphins was an experience she will always cherish. Katrina said her family has always given her much love and encouragement to cope with her disability and sharing her dream with them was her special way to say “thank you.”
P.S. Seems like the perfect song to include, doesn’t it? Enjoy!
