Day 478: Ooh, baby, it’s a wild world

Here, kitty, kitty, kitty....

I’ve always been a cat person (even though I’m allergic to the furry fellows), and now I guess I’m a “big cat” person. I found a great site for the Wildlife Conservation Society where simply clicking on a button can generate donations to protect the habitat for endangered big cats.

Apparently, several species of big cats, such as jaguars, snow leopards and tigers, are in danger of extinction due to the loss of their natural habitat, poaching, and other threats.

I think I'll name him Spot.

Here’s how your “click” donation works

A group of advertisers – including Campbell’s and Science Diet – sponsor the site, so every click generates a cash donation from those sponsors to help protect big-cat habitat. And 100% of the donations raised go directly to the Wildlife Conservation Society to fund the research and conservation projects that protect critical habitat and save species from extinction.

According to the WCS website:

“In 2009 alone, with your help, Wildlife Conservation Society has:

  • developed new software to track endangered tigers through rapid identification of tiger individuals by their unique stripe patterns;
  • helped create new national parks in Camaroon and Afghanistan
  • led camera-trap photo censuses of endangered jaguars in Ecuador and cheetahs in Algeria, providing basic population data critical to understanding and protecting these magnificent big cats.”

This is the message I received after my first click:

Your click protected 11,000 sq. ft. of big cat habitat today … So far, 365,063 people have protected 15,480,029 acres of habitat.

How purrrr-fect! (Sorry couldn’t resist….)

P.S. You probably knew this song was coming. Enjoy!
