Day 511: Singhing in the rain

Ambrose Bierce (aka "Bitter Bierce" ... isn't that a beverage?)

Mr. Singh took me by surprise today. As you may recall, I have a standing order with him on Wednesdays for a copy of the Outreach Connection (“Helping the Homeless and the Unemployed”). As you may also recall, today was Monday.

So when I saw him sitting in Metro Hall with his newspaper satchel by his side, I thought for a minute I’d fast-forwarded to mid-week (these new antibiotics are rather strong)….

But all became clear when he explained that because of the brutally cold weather we’d been having (minus 23 C today … I swear I saw an ice sculpture’s teeth chattering), he’d had to abandon his outdoor Wednesday morning post and relocate to a spot inside the Hall, where I could find him Mondays and Wednesdays.

Then, he remembered that I’d missed the week before the holidays (my first sick day) and he produced my back issue.

“So now you’re caught up!” he said, smiling.

“Thanks,” I told him. “Happy New Year!”

And his front page Notable Quotables?

Last issue:

Barometer: An ingenious instrument that indicates what kind of weather we are having.
— Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914), The Devil’s Dictionary

This issue:

The future ain’t what it used to be.
—Yogi Berra (1925-present)

P.S. Okay, it wasn’t raining today … but if it had been that would mean it was warmer. Enjoy!
