Day 544: Somos El Mundo

Why do some songs sound so much better in Spanish? As much as I loved the original We Are the World (and the Canadian version Tears Are Not Enough), this new version in Spanish, Somos El Mundo, is so full of life and passion, it makes me wonder why it took a disaster in Haiti to spark the idea only now. According to Billboard.com, it’s the first time the song has ever been recorded in a language other than English.

Unfortunately the relief effort in Haiti is still very much needed, so today I downloaded this single and video from iTunes Canada, the proceeds of which will support the ongoing rebuilding and aid to Haiti.

The project was organized by Gloria and Emilio Estefan, produced by Quincy Jones and Estefan, and features a virtual Who’s Who of Latin music stars. Along with Ms. Gloria Estefan herself, Jose Feliciano, Jon Secada, Luis Fonsi, and my personal favourite, David Archuleta. Oh, and a close second is Andy Garcia on the bongos!

P.S. A snippet of the video version. The single can be purchased at www.itunes.com/SomosElMundo or www.itunes.ca/SomosElMundo!
