Day 553: You’ve got voicemail

I heard a lovely personal story on the radio yesterday. It was from a young woman who told the story of her battle with cancer. She explained how lonely the treatments and procedures she suffered through could be and how she found comfort from a surprising source.

A colleague she barely knew had left some messages of support for her on her home phone (since she was usually at the hospital or doctor’s office when he called).

They hadn’t been close before she got sick, but she said there was something about his voice and the sincerity of his messages that gave her strength and encouragement during that difficult time. She said she’d replay them over and over and they gave her a sense of calm each time she heard them.

She even ended up putting them on her iPod and listening to them during her chemo sessions — hearing that friendly voice helped her feel less alone, she said. And the story had a very happy ending … she recovered, they spent time together in person, fell in love and eventually got married.

Her story reminded me that you never know the effect the smallest gestures of kindness can have on others. So, with that in mind, I left a few messages of my own today … I doubt they’ll be downloaded onto any iPods though. 🙂

P.S. Also heard this song for the first time in a while today. One of my all-time faves. Enjoy!
