Day 600: Happy Canada Day!

My good deed today involved a trip to Tim Hortons … and no, not just ’cause it’s Canada Day … although that does seem fitting.

I contributed to the Timmies’ Children’s Foundation Camp fund, which will send more than 14,000 kids to camp this year, according to their website.

The only reason I ever had the chance to go to summer camp was because my generous Grade 8 teacher — Mr. Harris, best. teacher. ever. — ran a camp in Haliburton, Ontario, and every year he’d invite both Grade 8 classes in our small public school to his camp for a whole week (before his paying summer campers arrived).

I’d at least been on family (and Girl Guide) tenting trips in the forest but some of the kids had never been in the woods, around a campfire or, gasp, in a canoe.

It was such an incredible experience I think it should be part of every school curriculum at one point or another.

But since that’s not about to happen, I’m happy to contribute to the Timmies camp fund … and keep those happy campers in Timbits….

Happy Canada Day, everyone!

P.S. k.d. lang singing Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Opening Ceremonies (iTunes version). A proud Canadian moment. Enjoy!
