Horses are beautiful, majestic creatures … but they scare me to death, to be honest.
However, I was happy to sponsor someone much braver than I in the Al Humphrey Memorial Ride again this year. The annual 25-kilometre trail ride raises money each year for worthy causes, this year it supported cancer-research programs at the Markham-Stouffville Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital.
The ride was established in honour of “Al,” Allan Stewart Humphrey (October 10, 1932 – February 2, 2006), proprietor of Al’s Tack Shop in Stouffville, Ontario.
According to the Ride website, “During his lifetime Al gave selflessly in support of many deserving organizations and charities. It is in this spirit that the Al Humphrey Memorial Ride has been established. Recipient charities will be named on an annual basis in advance of the current year’s event.”
I never knew Al, but he sounds like my good-deed kinda guy. What a great way to follow his example and carry on a cool — albeit terrifying for some of us — tradition.
P.S. A beautiful stripped down version of the Stones’ song! Enjoy!
