Day 670: Honour code

Came across this cool bookstore sign in my online travels today. Not only is it a wonderful use of the honour system, but any effort to share the love of reading, gets top marks in my book (heh, see what I did there? 🙂 )

The sign also reminded me of a toll road I took this summer. It was a steep winding road going up a mountain in Vermont that led to a bunch of hiking trails.

It cost $5 to use the road (to cover maintenance, I guess), and if the gatekeeper had gone home, there was a little box set up at the foot of the trail for your entrance fee.

I like the honour system. It reminds me that people still believe in the potential goodness — and honour — of their fellow humans. Or at least that it outweighs their hunger for cold hard cash.

Even in this world of security cameras and I.D. checks, it’s nice to know there are still places that rely on the kindness of strangers.

I had to rely on the honour system myself today.

Me doing the honourable thing… hey, they did say please….

I donated a couple of boxes of used clothing, toys and books to a local charity that offered to pick them up from my porch.

Now, anyone could have taken them I suppose, but I trust they went to those in need.

That’s my system.
